Jamieson's of Shetland: Nature Transformed into Woollen Fabrics

Ever think about the mechanics of how sheep wool becomes fabric? If you are visiting on the mainland of Shetland, it is a must see to visit the mill of Jamieson’s of Shetland, located in Sandness   on the mainland of Shetland.

At the encouragement and guidance of the GlobalYell team, last week I made the trip to look inside Jamieson’s mill. What an amazing opportunity. I observed the process of transforming raw wool into an array of colourful yarns for a fantastic result of practical, durable, intricately designed fabrics.  The Jamieson’s team and their huge machinery transforms sheep fleece into high-quality yarn that is either woven into tweeds or knitted into knitwear, all on the premises. The featured collage of photos offers you a glimpse inside their mill.

Between the beautiful landscape on your way to Sandness and touring Jamieson’s mill, you will come away with a more intimate feel of the island, an education about textiles, and the chance to acquire a beautiful piece of tweed or knitwear for your enjoyment for years to come!
